SWFL Eagles ~ M15 Falls Backwards Off The Branch While Sleeping! SLOMO!! 10.7.21

Lady Hawk - Harriet and M15 were perched side by side sleeping this evening. M can be seen with his foot outstretched and dangling below the branch. He would pull it in and then let it drop again like he normally does while sleeping. But then it looks like he loses his balance and goes down falling backwards till out of view. Cam 2 also shows him falling down and falling below the nest. Harriet is startled awake and she starts to vocalize her distress. She looks around for him calling but M does not return to the branch or nest. In regular time and slomo! Normally an eagle's talons lock around the branch - it is this locking mechanism that keeps them from falling off at night. Birds that sleep while perched have tendons in their legs that involuntarily cause the feet to clasp a perch while the bird is in a squatting position. These tendons will keep the feet tightly gripping the perch until the bird awakens and straightens its legs. In M's case, it seems he is falling off the branch or losing his balance when his foot is relaxed and not gripping the branch or when he is changing feet to grip. I wonder if this is due to the changing of sleeping positions that Harriet & M are using now that the nest tree branches are out of whack from the storms this summer? I hope that this is some sort of fluke and won't keep happening to M! Thank you for watching!
